On October 11, 2022 nearly all ambassadors accredited to the Holly See joined a solemn ceremony at the Capella Papale inside St. Peter’s Basilica celebrating 60th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, promoting the process of aggiornamento and modernization of the Catholic Church
The Council promoted more important role of laics in the Church activities including their active participation in Mass, ecumenical approach to protestant and orthodox faiths, interreligious dialogue with other religions, etc. Many goals, priorities and actual endeavours performed by Pope Francis are in line with the principles promoted 60 years ago.
At the end of the celebration participants were lighting a candle recalling the day when Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council in 1962 which lasted three years.
