October 7, 2024. Appointment of Msgr. L. Nemet as cardinal |
Pope Francis, during the regular Sunday prayer (Angelus), announced the proclamation of twenty-one new cardinals at the Consistory, which will take place on December 8, 2024. Among them is Msgr. Ladislav Nemet, Archbishop of Belgrade, who will thus become the first cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church from the Republic of Serbia. Cardinal is the highest title (other than the papal) in the Roman Catholic Church, and these dignitaries become part of the College of Cardinals. This is an exceptional recognition for Msgr. L. Nemet, the Belgrade Archdiocese, as well as for the Republic of Serbia, and carries a special importance in the year in which the centenary of the Belgrade Archdiocese is celebrated.
